Moving to Spain
Where in Spain has the coolest summers and warmest winters?
A ten-year station-data comparison points to El Hierro for a small seasonal temperature range, with Cádiz and Tarifa among the mainland places to explore.
There is more than one way to enjoy a mild climate
If you love the idea of life in Spain but would rather avoid intense summer heat and cold winters, start by asking what comfortable weather means to you. Warm winter afternoons, cooler nights and a modest change between seasons are different preferences. No single place has both the lowest summer temperature and the highest winter temperature everywhere in Spain.
For a practical comparison, we analysed available monthly temperature records for 2016–2025, the last ten complete calendar years, in NOAA’s Global Summary of the Month archive. El Hierro Airport stood out among the complete, low-altitude station series with a winter mean of at least 12°C, when ranked by the smallest difference between summer and winter means. This is a defined comparison, not a claim that every home on one island has Spain’s “best weather”.
What the ten-year temperature comparison shows
Winter here means January, February and December; summer means June, July and August. The table gives seasonal averages in Celsius. The average daily high and low describe typical daytime and overnight temperatures across the period, not the hottest or coldest individual day.
| Station | Winter / summer mean | Winter average high / low | Summer average high / low | Monthly coverage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| El Hierro Airport | 19.8°C / 23.5°C | 21.8°C / 17.8°C | 25.4°C / 21.6°C | 30/30 winter; 30/30 summer |
| Cádiz | 14.3°C / 24.8°C | 17.3°C / 11.4°C | 27.8°C / 21.8°C | 30/30 winter; 30/30 summer |
| Tarifa | 13.8°C / 22.8°C | 16.5°C / 11.1°C | 25.8°C / 19.9°C | 29/30 winter; 30/30 summer |
| A Coruña | 11.9°C / 19.4°C | 14.7°C / 9.2°C | 22.4°C / 16.3°C | 30/30 winter; 30/30 summer |
| Málaga Airport | 13.7°C / 26.5°C | 18.4°C / 9.0°C | 31.3°C / 21.7°C | 30/30 winter; 30/30 summer |
Calculated from NOAA GSOM monthly values, weighted by calendar days in each month. Tarifa lacks one winter month; its figures are an indicative comparison, not part of the complete-series ranking. Actual days and individual homes can be warmer or cooler.
The Canary Islands: a closer look at El Hierro
At El Hierro Airport the winter mean was 19.8°C and the summer mean 23.5°C. Average winter daily highs were 21.8°C, with lows of 17.8°C; summer highs averaged 25.4°C and lows 21.6°C. That small seasonal swing is an appealing starting point if year-round warmth matters to you.
An airport station does not describe every part of a mountainous island. Elevation, aspect, wind and distance from the coast matter. Think about practical connections, services and the pace of island life as carefully as the temperatures. Visit the actual area and home before deciding.
A mainland alternative: Cádiz
For buyers who prefer mainland Spain, Cádiz is worth a look. In the complete station series meeting our warm-winter and elevation screen, it had the smallest summer-to-winter mean difference. Its winter mean was 14.3°C and its summer mean 24.8°C.
Average daily highs and lows were 17.3°C and 11.4°C in winter, and 27.8°C and 21.8°C in summer. Those figures suggest a useful place to investigate if you want a southern coastal setting with less summer heat than some inland locations. They are averages, not a promise of cool weather every day.
Do not overlook Tarifa or northern Spain
Tarifa is an important near-complete alternative: the available record shows a summer mean of 22.8°C and winter mean of 13.8°C. Its summer is cooler than Cádiz in this comparison, while its winter is slightly cooler too. One of the 30 winter months is missing, so we show it transparently rather than presenting an equal-coverage ranking.
If cooler summers matter more than warm winters, northern Spain deserves attention. A Coruña’s complete series gives a summer mean of 19.4°C and winter mean of 11.9°C. It falls just below our chosen 12°C winter screen, demonstrating how a small change in your preference changes the shortlist. Your personal priorities matter more than a single winner.
How we checked the data—and its limits
We screened 207 Spain-coded station identifiers in the NOAA inventory and obtained 20,163 monthly records across 185 station series for 2016–2025. Sixty-nine series had all 30 winter and all 30 summer months for mean temperature, mean daily high and mean daily low. We did not fill missing months or treat incomplete series as complete.
For our mild-weather balance screen, we selected complete series at elevations of 500 metres or less with winter mean temperatures of at least 12°C, then ranked the summer-minus-winter mean difference. The mainland comparison excludes the Canary and Balearic Islands and Ceuta and Melilla.
This covers the available Spain-coded series in this archive, not every Spanish weather observation, private sensor or neighbourhood. Some locations have more than one station series. Rain, wind, humidity, sunshine, heatwaves and future climate are not captured by this temperature ranking. Read the methodology and compare the actual place you are considering.
Visit in winter and summer before buying
A pleasant average cannot tell you how a particular living room feels in August or on a winter evening. Visit in both summer and winter, notice shade and ventilation, and ask about heating, cooling, damp and running costs. Try the journeys and services that would be part of an ordinary week.
If you can, rent in your shortlisted area before buying. It gives you a chance to test the climate and lifestyle without rushing the decision.
