Why buy a property on the Costa Blanca?

The Costa Blanca is an appealing place to begin a Spanish property search if you enjoy the Mediterranean and want a choice of settings. Along Alicante province’s coast, beaches, coves and seaside towns offer different ways to spend your time. The attraction is being able to choose a place that reflects the life you want.

For some buyers that means an apartment with a terrace near the sea. For others it means a house with outdoor space or a town where daily errands can be done on foot. Buying a property on the Costa Blanca starts with identifying which of those details would make you feel at home.

Explore the coast before choosing your town

The northern Costa Blanca includes places such as Dénia and Jávea, with beaches and rocky coastal scenery to explore. Further along the coast, Altea, Calp and Alicante offer other possibilities, while the southern coastline includes areas around Guardamar del Segura and Torrevieja.

Treat these as places to investigate, rather than a list of interchangeable locations. Walk the neighbourhood, check the slope of the route home and look at the shops and services you would actually use. A short map distance to the sea can feel very different when you try the journey yourself.

Make room for the things you enjoy

Living on the Costa Blanca could put a beach walk, a coffee outside or a visit to a local market into your weekly routine. Think about the activities you already enjoy and how a new home would support them. Look beyond the view to consider space for visiting family, working from home or keeping a hobby.

Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport provides a practical reference point when comparing journeys. Check current routes, seasonal timetables and the door-to-door transfer from each town. Being able to return easily, or welcome friends, may be an important part of choosing your Costa Blanca home.

See the Costa Blanca in summer and winter

Visit your preferred area in both summer and winter before buying a house on the Costa Blanca. In summer, pay attention to shade, cooling, noise and parking. In winter, assess sunlight in the rooms, heating and whether the neighbourhood has the pace and services you want.

Try a weekday as well as a weekend. Walk to the supermarket, test the local transport and explore at different times of day. Notice what is open, how the home feels in the evening and whether the setting would work for you through the year.

Consider renting before you buy

Renting first can give you time to find out what living on the Costa Blanca really means for you. A stay in the area you are considering lets you test your wish list before committing to a purchase. You might decide that a smaller home in a walkable location suits you better, or that a garden is essential.

If possible, choose a rental that resembles the type of home you hope to buy, and make sure the agreement fits your intended stay. Keep a record of what works and what you would change. This can make your later property viewings far more useful.

Turn your property wish list into a workable search

Start with your preferred area, budget, timescale, property type and bedrooms. Then separate the essentials from the extras: a pool, garden, sea view, beachfront location or walking distance to amenities. Tell us about any accessibility needs and how you expect to use the home.

Take independent Spanish legal advice before signing or paying a deposit. Ask your lawyer to check the property’s ownership, permissions, debts, community obligations and total purchase costs, including any coastal restrictions where applicable. Buying a home and qualifying to live in Spain are separate matters, so obtain advice on residency or visas if needed.
