Planning Your Move to Spain: Visa and Residence Options
Researching the right visa or residence route is crucial when planning a move to Spain.
Introduction to Spanish Visas and Residency
Moving to Spain requires careful planning, including researching the right visa or residence route. The UK government's guidance on living in Spain provides valuable information on visas, working, healthcare, and driving. Additionally, the Spanish Consulate in London offers information on national visas, which are required for third-country nationals staying in Spain for more than 90 days.
National Visas for Spain
National visas are necessary for third-country nationals who plan to stay in Spain for more than 90 days for work, study, or establishing residence. Citizens of the European Union, European Economic Area, or Switzerland do not need a visa for long-term stays, but must register with the Spanish authorities. Family members accompanying them may need a residence permit or a visa for family members of a citizen of the Union.
Data Protection and Visa Applications
The processing of personal data for visa applicants is governed by the General Data Protection Regulation. Applicants have the right to access, rectify, and erase their personal data in the Visa Information System (VIS) and the Schengen Information System (SIS). The Spanish Data Protection Agency provides more information on these rights and how to exercise them.
Complaints and Suggestions
Complaints or suggestions about the visa application procedure can be submitted online or in writing to the Spanish Consulate in London. The Consulate also provides information on the basic legislation governing visas and residency in Spain, including Organic Law 4/2000 and Royal Decree 557/2011.
